The Moon
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, orbiting at an average distance of 384,400 kilometers. It is tidally locked to Earth, so the same hemisphere always faces us. Its surface records billions of years of impacts and ancient volcanic plains, and its polar craters harbor water ice. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11's astronauts became the first humans to walk on its surface.
