Mount Everest
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, standing 8,848.86 metres (29,031.69 feet) above sea level according to the joint China–Nepal announcement of December 2020. It sits on the crest of the Great Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and is known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan. Built by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates 40–50 million years ago, the mountain is still rising, and its summit — with only one-third of sea-level oxygen — sits in the “death zone.” First climbed by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, Everest has since been summited more than 11,000 times, while more than 320 climbers have died on its slopes.
